Hair Extensions: A Simple Solution to Aging Hair
Hair, like the rest of the human body, changes as we age. The result is usually less than satisfying, as certain characteristics, such as thinning hair, receding hairline, and graying hair, are associated with many of the negative aspects of getting older. However, there are ways to meet these changes head-on. Hair extensions, particularly non damaging extensions, can provide volume, length, and color without damaging your natural hair.
Here are three ways hair changes with age and how hair extensions can help address each change:
Thinning Hair
One sign of aging is hair loss. Hair loss can take many different forms. In men, hair loss is usually characterized by a receding hairline above the forehead and a gradual thinning at the crown. In women, the hairline usually remains stable, but hair gradually thins along a line at the top of the head and spreads outward.
There are two theories about why hair loss happens. Both are tied to hormones:
- Testosterone is related to hair growth. In both men and women, some testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (or DHT). DHT is what causes male bodies to develop male characteristics. DHT is also responsible for slowing down the hair growth process. Specifically, the stages of hair growth are altered by DHT so that the period in which the hair is growing become shortened and the period in which the hair is susceptible to falling out occurs sooner. In both men and women, testosterone levels fall as we age, but DHT levels generally stay the same. It is believed that this shift in proportion between testosterone to DHT is responsible for many cases of hair loss.
- The thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. While the mechanism is not exactly understood, hypothyroidism, a condition in which thyroid production is too low, causes hair loss. As we age, our thyroid gland naturally slows down. Even if this slow down does not reach the level of hypothyroidism, the reduction in thyroid hormones may be connected to age-related hair loss.
Hair extensions, particularly non damaging extensions, from hair extensions salons can help hair look fuller by adding volume to natural hair and covering areas of hair loss.
Gray Hair
Gray hair is another sign of aging. Gray hair is not actually gray. It is uncolored. As we age, the pigment cells inside the hair follicles slow in their production of melanin. Melanin is what gives hair its color. This means that rather than colored hair, the follicles grow uncolored hair that appears gray or white.
There is no explanation for why pigment cells lose their ability to produce melanin as we age. However, the probability that your hair will grow in gray is more likely than not once you reach age 35. However, the average life of a hair strand is about three to five years, so even when your hair starts growing in gray, it will take some time before all the hair on your head is gray.
Hair extension salons can dye hair extensions any color, as long as they are produced from natural human hair. This allows you to buy hair extensions of a color that is close to the final color you want, and the hair extension salon can dye it to match your desired color. In this manner, you can dye your natural hair to eliminate the gray, and hair extensions that match your hair color to increase the volume and cover any thin spots.
Weak Hair
In addition to growing in with less or no pigment, new hair begins growing in with less protein as we get older. This produces hair that is fine, wispy, and weak. This hair is prone to breaking, particularly when styling the hair. Since women change hairstyles 150 times during their lifetimes, this is a significant change.
Non damaging extensions can add volume, cover any thinning spots, and darken gray or light hair, addressing all of the characteristics of aging hair.
As we age, hair loss increases and follicles slow their production of protein. This means that hair tends to thin out, loses its pigment, and grows in fine and wispy. Non damaging extensions can resolve all those problems without pulling or breaking the hair.
